Solar Panel Warranties Explained: What's Actually Covered
Solar panels come with multiple warranties — equipment, performance, and workmanship. Here's what each covers and what to look for.
When you invest $15,000–$25,000 in solar panels, you need to understand what's covered and for how long. Here's a complete guide to solar warranties.
Three Types of Solar Warranties
1. Equipment Warranty (Product Warranty)
Covers defects in the solar panels themselves.
- Standard: 10–12 years
- Premium: 25 years (from manufacturers like SunPower, LG, Panasonic)
- What it covers: Manufacturing defects, premature degradation, physical failure
- What it doesn't cover: Damage from improper installation, weather, or neglect
2. Performance Warranty (Power Guarantee)
Guarantees that your panels will produce a minimum percentage of their rated output over time.
- Standard: 25 years at 80% of rated output
- Premium: 25–30 years at 85–92% of rated output
- How it works: If your 400W panel produces less than 320W (80%) in year 25, the manufacturer replaces it
- Important: This is pro-rated — you get a percentage of the panel's value, not a full replacement
3. Workmanship Warranty (Installer Warranty)
Covers the installation work — wiring, mounting, roof penetrations.
- Standard: 5–10 years
- Premium: 10–25 years (from top installers)
- What it covers: Leaks, wiring issues, mounting failures
- What it doesn't cover: Acts of God, improper maintenance
Inverter Warranties
Inverters have shorter lifespans than panels and separate warranties:
- String inverters: 10–15 years (expect replacement at year 12–15)
- Microinverters: 25 years (Enphase, APsystems)
- Hybrid inverters: 10–12 years
Battery Warranties
- Standard: 10 years or 6,000–10,000 cycles
- Capacity guarantee: Typically 70% of original capacity at end of warranty
- What it covers: Battery cell degradation below guaranteed threshold
- What it doesn't cover: Damage from improper use or extreme temperatures
What to Look For
When choosing solar equipment and an installer:
Equipment
- 25-year product warranty (not just performance)
- 85%+ performance at year 25 (not the standard 80%)
- Tier 1 manufacturer (bankable, established brand)
- Independent testing (PV Evolution Labs, DNV GL)
Installer
- 10+ year workmanship warranty
- NABCEP certified installers
- Local presence (not an out-of-state company that may not be around in 10 years)
- Transferable warranty (important if you sell your home)
Common Warranty Pitfalls
-
"25-year warranty" doesn't mean everything is covered for 25 years — the product warranty may only be 10–12 years, with a separate 25-year performance guarantee.
-
Workmanship warranties are only as good as the installer — if the installer goes out of business, the warranty is void. Choose an established, local installer.
-
Warranty exclusions — most warranties don't cover:
- Damage from acts of God (hail, wind, lightning)
- Damage from improper maintenance
- Damage from roof modifications
- Cosmetic issues that don't affect performance
-
Labor may not be included — some warranties cover the replacement panel but not the labor to remove and reinstall it. Check for "labor-inclusive" warranties.
-
Pro-rated replacements — performance warranties give you a decreasing percentage of value over time. A panel failing in year 20 might only get you 20% of the panel's cost.
Roof Warranty Concerns
Solar installation involves roof penetrations. Make sure:
- Your roof warranty isn't voided by solar installation
- The installer provides a roof penetration warranty (10–25 years)
- Your roof has 10+ years of life remaining before going solar
Insurance Coverage
Add your solar system to your homeowners insurance:
- Covers damage from hail, wind, fire, and theft
- Typically adds $50–$150/year to your premium
- Make sure your coverage limit includes the full replacement value of the system
