Question 1

Is solar worth it in Texas in 2026?

Accepted Answer

For many Texas homeowners, yes. Texas gets 5 to 6+ peak sun hours a day, summer air-conditioning loads are high, and electricity rates have risen. Whether it pays off for your home depends on your usage, roof, shading, utility and buyback plan, which is why a free site-specific assessment is the best first step.

Question 2

Does Texas have net metering for solar?

Accepted Answer

Texas has no statewide net metering law. In deregulated areas (CenterPoint, Oncor, AEP Texas, TNMP), some retail electricity providers offer solar buyback plans that credit exported power. Municipal utilities and co-ops such as Austin Energy, CPS Energy and Pedernales set their own export rules.

Question 3

Is there still a federal solar tax credit for Texas homeowners?

Accepted Answer

The 30% federal residential clean energy credit (Section 25D) ended for homeowner-owned systems installed after December 31, 2025. Leased systems and power purchase agreements may still benefit from business tax credits that installers can pass through. A licensed installer can explain the current options for your situation.

Question 4

Does solar raise my property taxes in Texas?

Accepted Answer

No. Texas Tax Code Section 11.27 exempts the added value of a solar energy system from property taxes, so you can add value to your home without increasing your appraisal for the solar equipment.

Question 5

Can solar panels keep my power on during a Texas grid outage?

Accepted Answer

Solar panels alone shut off during a grid outage for safety. To keep power on during events like Winter Storm Uri, you need a battery storage system (or a backup-capable inverter) paired with your panels. Many Texas homeowners now add batteries for this reason.

Question 6

How long does solar installation take in Texas?

Accepted Answer

The physical installation usually takes 1 to 3 days. The full process, including site survey, design, permits, utility interconnection and inspection, typically takes 30 to 90 days depending on your city and utility.

Question 7

Do solar panels hold up to Texas hail and hurricanes?

Accepted Answer

Quality panels are tested for hail impact and high winds, and most carry 25-year warranties. Ask your installer about panel hail ratings, racking wind ratings for your area and whether your homeowners insurance covers rooftop solar.

Question 8

How many solar panels does a Texas home need?

Accepted Answer

Most Texas homes need roughly 15 to 35 panels, driven mainly by summer air-conditioning use. Your installer sizes the system from 12 months of electric bills, roof space and orientation.

Question 9

Can I get solar if my HOA has rules in Texas?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Texas Property Code Section 202.010 limits HOAs from banning solar panels, although they can apply some reasonable placement rules.

Question 10

What happens if I sell my Texas home with solar?

Accepted Answer

Owned solar systems generally transfer with the home and can be a selling point. Leased systems or PPAs require the buyer to assume the agreement, so review the contract terms before signing.

Question 11

How do I get a free solar quote in Texas?

Accepted Answer

Complete the free Texas solar assessment on this page. It takes about 2 minutes, and a licensed Texas installer partner reviews your home details and contacts you with a no-obligation custom design and quote.

Question 12

Should I add a home battery with solar in Texas?

Accepted Answer

Batteries make the most sense in Texas if you want outage backup, your retail plan pays little for exported power, or you have time-of-use rates. They add cost, so compare backup needs and savings goals with your installer.
