Question 1

How much do solar panels cost in 2026?

Accepted Answer

The average residential solar system costs $15,000–$25,000 before incentives. After the 30% federal tax credit, the net cost drops to $10,500–$17,500. Additional state rebates can reduce costs further. Use our Solar Cost Calculator to estimate costs for your specific system size and location.

Question 2

How much can I save with solar panels?

Accepted Answer

Most homeowners save $15,000–$35,000 over 25 years with solar panels. Your actual savings depend on your electricity rate, system size, peak sun hours, and available incentives. Homeowners in high-rate states like California and Hawaii see the fastest payback. Use our Solar Savings Calculator for a personalized estimate.

Question 3

How long do solar panels last?

Accepted Answer

Solar panels typically last 25–30 years. Most manufacturers offer 25-year warranties guaranteeing at least 80% of original output. Inverters usually need replacement after 10–15 years, and batteries last 10–15 years depending on usage and chemistry.

Question 4

What is the federal solar tax credit (ITC)?

Accepted Answer

The Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) gives you a dollar-for-dollar reduction in federal income taxes equal to 30% of your solar system's total cost. A $21,000 system gets a $6,300 tax credit. The 30% rate is available through 2032, then steps down to 26% in 2033 and 22% in 2034. You need sufficient tax liability to claim the full credit.

Question 5

Is solar worth it for my home?

Accepted Answer

Solar is worth it for most homeowners with monthly bills over $100, good roof orientation, and decent sun exposure. Factors that affect your ROI include your electricity rate, available incentives, roof condition, shading, and whether your state offers net metering. Run our free AI Home Energy Advisor for a personalized analysis.

Question 6

How does net metering work?

Accepted Answer

Net metering allows you to send excess solar energy back to the grid and receive credits on your utility bill. When your panels produce more than you use (like during the day), the excess goes to the grid. At night, you pull power from the grid and use your credits. Net metering can offset 80–95% of your bill in states with favorable policies.

Question 7

Do solar panels work during a power outage?

Accepted Answer

Standard grid-tied solar panels shut off during a power outage for safety reasons. To keep your power on during outages, you need a battery backup system. A solar battery stores excess energy produced during the day for use at night or during outages. Most battery systems can power essential loads for 1–3 days.

Question 8

How many solar panels do I need?

Accepted Answer

The average home needs 15–25 solar panels (a 5–8 kW system) to offset its electricity usage. The exact number depends on your daily energy consumption, available roof space, peak sun hours in your area, and panel efficiency. Use our Roof Solar Potential Calculator to see how many panels fit on your roof.

Question 9

What size battery backup do I need?

Accepted Answer

Most homes need 10–20 kWh of battery storage for backup power. This covers essential loads (refrigerator, lights, internet, medical devices) for 1–2 days. If you need whole-home backup or extended outage coverage, you may need 20–40 kWh. Use our Battery Backup Calculator to size a system for your needs.

Question 10

Can I charge an EV with solar panels?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Solar panels and EVs are a perfect pairing. A typical EV needs about 10 kWh per day for 35 miles of driving — roughly the output of 3 solar panels. Charging your EV with solar makes your fuel cost nearly zero compared to $0.12/mile for gas. Use our EV Charging Cost Calculator to compare.

Question 11

What is the difference between grid-tied and off-grid solar?

Accepted Answer

Grid-tied solar connects to the utility grid, allowing you to use net metering and avoid the need for batteries. Off-grid solar is completely independent and requires batteries and a generator for when solar isn't producing. Grid-tied is cheaper and simpler; off-grid provides independence but costs 2–3x more. A hybrid system (grid-tied + battery) offers the best of both.

Question 12

How long does solar installation take?

Accepted Answer

The physical installation typically takes 1–3 days for a residential system. However, the entire process — from contract to activation — usually takes 4–8 weeks due to permitting, utility approval, and inspections. Timeline varies by location and utility.

Question 13

Does solar increase home value?

Accepted Answer

Yes, studies show that homes with solar panels sell for about 4% more on average than comparable homes without solar. A $400,000 home with solar could sell for $416,000. The value increase is highest in states with high electricity rates and strong solar markets.

Question 14

What happens to solar panels in winter or cloudy days?

Accepted Answer

Solar panels still produce energy on cloudy days, typically 10–25% of their peak output. In winter, shorter days and lower sun angles reduce production, but panels can actually be more efficient in cold temperatures. Snow covering panels will block production, but most panels are installed at an angle that helps snow slide off. Over a full year, summer overproduction usually balances winter underproduction.

Question 15

What is peak sun hours (PSH)?

Accepted Answer

Peak sun hours (PSH) measures the average daily solar radiation an area receives, expressed as the equivalent number of hours of full sunlight at 1,000 watts per square meter. For example, 5.5 PSH means the area receives the equivalent of 5.5 hours of peak sunlight per day. Arizona and Nevada have the highest PSH (6.5), while northern states like Washington have lower PSH (3.5).

Question 16

Can I go solar if I rent my home?

Accepted Answer

If you rent, you typically can't install rooftop solar. However, you may have options: community solar programs (subscribe to a shared solar farm), portable solar panels, or ask your landlord about installing solar. Some states and utilities offer community solar programs that provide bill credits for subscribing to off-site solar.

Question 17

What roof types are best for solar panels?

Accepted Answer

Asphalt shingle roofs are the most common and easiest for solar installation. Metal roofs are excellent and often last longer than the panels. Tile and slate roofs can work but may require special mounting and cost more. Flat roofs work well with angled mounting systems. Your roof should have at least 10 years of life remaining before going solar.

Question 18

How do I maintain my solar panels?

Accepted Answer

Solar panels require minimal maintenance. In most climates, rain keeps them clean enough. In dusty or dry areas, you may need to hose them down 2–4 times per year. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive brushes. Most systems include monitoring apps that alert you to production issues. Annual visual inspections are recommended.

Question 19

What is the solar payback period?

Accepted Answer

The average solar payback period is 7–12 years, meaning your system pays for itself through energy savings in that timeframe. After payback, you enjoy free electricity for the remaining 13–18+ years of the system's life. High-rate states like California and Hawaii see payback in 5–7 years. Use our Payback Period Calculator to estimate yours.

Question 20

Should I get a solar battery?

Accepted Answer

A solar battery makes sense if you experience frequent power outages, live in a state with time-of-use rates (like California), or have no net metering (like Georgia). Batteries add $10,000–$20,000 to your system cost. If you have reliable grid power and good net metering, you may not need one. Use our Generator vs Battery Calculator to compare backup options.

Question 21

Are there solar incentives beyond the federal tax credit?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Many states offer additional incentives: state tax credits (AZ, NY, NM, SC, IA, UT), cash rebates (CO, OR, WI, MD), SREC markets (NJ, PA, MA, MD, OH, IL), property tax exemptions (most states), and sales tax exemptions (FL, WA, NY, NJ). Check your state's specific incentives on our state solar pages.

Question 22

How much roof space do I need for solar?

Accepted Answer

A typical 7kW solar system needs about 350–450 square feet of usable roof space (roughly 18–22 panels at ~17.5 sq ft each). South-facing roofs are ideal, but east and west orientations also work. Shading from trees, chimneys, and nearby buildings reduces usable space. Use our Roof Solar Potential Calculator to estimate your roof's capacity.

Question 23

What is an SREC (Solar Renewable Energy Certificate)?

Accepted Answer

An SREC is a tradable certificate representing the environmental benefits of generating 1 megawatt-hour of solar energy. In states with SREC markets (NJ, PA, MA, MD, OH, IL, DC), you earn SRECs for your solar production and can sell them for additional income — typically $5–$50+ per SREC depending on the market.

Question 24

Can I install solar panels myself?

Accepted Answer

While DIY solar installation is possible, it's not recommended for most homeowners. Proper installation requires electrical work, roofing knowledge, permitting, and utility coordination. Mistakes can lead to roof leaks, electrical hazards, and voided warranties. Professional installation is safer, faster, and often qualifies for warranties and incentives that DIY installations don't.

Question 25

What is NEM 3.0 and how does it affect solar in California?

Accepted Answer

NEM 3.0 (Net Energy Metering 3.0) is California's updated solar billing policy that took effect in April 2023. It reduces the credit rate for excess solar exported to the grid from near-retail (~$0.25–$0.30/kWh) to avoided-cost (~$0.08–$0.12/kWh). This makes battery storage much more valuable for new California solar customers, as self-consumption is now more economical than exporting.

Question 26

How do I choose a solar installer?

Accepted Answer

Look for installers with: proper licensing and certifications (NABCEP), strong warranties (25-year equipment + 10+ year workmanship), local experience, positive reviews, and transparent pricing. Get at least 3 quotes. Avoid high-pressure sales tactics. As an independent advisor, QuigSolar doesn't sell or install solar — we help you make an informed decision before talking to installers.

Question 27

What happens to my solar system if I move?

Accepted Answer

Solar systems are typically considered fixtures and transfer with the home. Solar increases home value by about 4%, so you may recoup your investment at sale. If you have a solar lease or PPA, check if it's transferable to the new owner. If you own the system outright, the buyer benefits from free electricity — a strong selling point.

Question 28

Is community solar a good option?

Accepted Answer

Community solar is excellent for renters, condo owners, or those with unsuitable roofs. You subscribe to a shared solar farm and receive bill credits on your utility bill. There's no upfront cost or installation. Savings are typically 5–15% off your electric bill. Availability varies by state — check with your utility for local community solar programs.

Question 29

What is the difference between kW and kWh?

Accepted Answer

Kilowatts (kW) measure power capacity — the maximum output of your solar system at any moment. A 7kW system can produce up to 7,000 watts at peak. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure energy produced or consumed over time. Your electric bill is measured in kWh. A 7kW system in a 5.5 PSH area produces about 7 × 5.5 × 30 × 0.82 = ~947 kWh/month.
