When NOT to Go Solar: Honest Advice for Homeowners
Solar is a great investment for many — but not for everyone. Here are the situations where you should wait or explore alternatives.
As an independent energy advisor, our job is to tell you the truth — even when that means recommending against solar. Here are the situations where solar doesn't make sense right now.
1. Your Monthly Bill Is Under $75
If your electricity bill is low, the savings from solar won't justify the $15,000–$25,000 investment. A 7kW system generating $75/month in savings has a 20+ year payback period — longer than the warranty on many system components.
What to do instead: Focus on energy efficiency upgrades (LED lighting, smart thermostats, insulation) that have faster payback. Revisit solar when your bills increase.
2. Your Roof Needs Replacement Soon
Solar panels last 25+ years. If your roof has less than 10 years of life left, you'll need to remove and reinstall your solar system during reroofing — a $2,000–$5,000 cost.
What to do: Replace your roof first, then add solar. Some roofers even offer integrated solar roofing.
3. Heavy Shading
If your roof is heavily shaded by trees, buildings, or terrain, solar production will be significantly reduced. Even one shaded panel can reduce the output of an entire string inverter system.
What to do: Consider tree trimming, ground-mount solar if you have unshaded yard space, or community solar programs.
4. You're Planning to Move Soon
Solar increases home value, but the increase may not fully recoup the upfront cost if you sell within 3-5 years. The ITC also requires you to have tax liability in the year of installation.
What to do: If you might move within 5 years, look into solar leases or PPAs that are transferable to the new owner. Or wait until you're settled.
5. No State Incentives and Poor Net Metering
Some states (like Georgia) offer minimal state incentives and no mandated net metering. This extends payback periods to 12-15+ years.
What to do: Calculate your specific payback using our Payback Period Calculator. If it's over 12 years, weigh the investment against other financial priorities.
How to Know for Sure
Run our free AI Home Energy Advisor. It analyzes your specific situation — bill, roof, location, shading, budget — and honestly tells you whether solar is the right move or whether you should wait. No sales pressure, no installer bias.
The smartest energy investment is the one that actually makes sense for your home. Sometimes that's solar. Sometimes it's efficiency upgrades. And sometimes, it's waiting.
